10 Things I wish I had Bought Before Starting My Natural Hair Journey

1.) KeraCare’s Defining Custard

$11.16 from Amazon

Contains Amla & Shikakai (Ayurvedic) Botanicals, Pectin, plus Argan & Abyssinian Oils.

Size: 8 oz.

Aids in getting shiny, well moisturized, clearly defined curls, waves and spirals. Natural botanicals infuse substantial moisture into the hair. Amla, Argan Oil and Abyssinian Oil add natural shine to hair and help minimize product flaking on hair.

  • Defines curls.
  • Maintains structured coils for days.
  • Minimizes frizz

I have a thick 4c, 4b mix of hair that doesnt’ easily get defined curls. Every now and then, your girl needs a professional intervention…..so I asked my aunt, a hairstylist, what product she’d recommend I use for defining my coils, and she swears down to this day that KeraCare’s curling defining custard is the only way to go. You’ll find KeraCare in any professional store or beauty supply that you go to. It’s a bit expensive but it’s legit.

2.) A Jumbo Bonnet

Alright so where do I start? I’ll begin by saying, this thing is EXTRA JUMBO for real. I pulled it down over my entire head and it was genuinely huge. I have an afro though so them small “baby” bonnets you see at the beauty supply simply don’t cut it for me. I gave the small bonnets a fair shot–about 3 nights–before reverting back to my somewhat trusty scarf.

Scarfs are cool and whatever for retaining moisture, but they don’t actually have any kind of grip other than how you tie them. For me, I had a real issue for a long time making it through a full night without my scarf coming off. I could’ve avoided so much hassle by getting a jumbo bonnet in the first place. I know I’m a bit of a rough sleeper but this bonnet was more loyal to my head than Jay Z was to Beyonce.(Don’t @ me) I first tried one out this past Summer while vacationing in my spring twists, and I was thoroughly pleased. Any natural sister knows that protective styles are a big part of the african-descent hair community, so if you get yourself something big enough to squeeze all your box braids/twists/cornrows into, then you can confidently say you’re winning at life.

  • One Size Fits All (More snug of a fit around forehead to keep all of hair in place)
  • Double lined Cap
  • Silky satin fabric with cotton lining
  • High design

  • Fits a lot of hair, even space for box braids and perm rods
  • Perfect for styling
  • No frizz

Purchaser Review: “Awesome! My daughter has A LOT of hair! Which causes problems with smaller sleeping bonnets. Its wonderful that although the bonnet is very large, the band around her head is a perfect fit (normal size head). Also, it has 2 fabric layers. So it doesn’t seem flimsy like other bonnets I’ve purchased. “

3.) TGIN’s Leave-in Conditioner

In case you didn’t know, TGIN stands for Thank God It’s Natural. So yes, this product is designed for coily hair divas like myself. Can I get an OtAy? I was hype to find a product that finally replenished my hair of the nutrients stripped post-wash. A good leave-in conditioner is hard to find since so many flake up the day after a wash. At least in my case anyways.

I love the consistency of this product. It doesn’t weight my curls down, and I’m left with soft manageable tresses. If shampoo got your hair a bit shook after a wash, then this is the product you need to reinvigorate your locks.

  • All-natural ingredients
  • Lightweight formula with no build-up

Now you know I’m a sucker for ingredients I can actually read so feast your eyes on the full ingredient list for this product:

4.) Lotta Body’s Foaming Mousse

This foaming mouse smells devine and is super easy to apply. It doesn’t leave a stocky residue on your fingers or hair and it dries nicely without any flaking or crunching. It took me so long to find a lightweight product that not only hydrated my curls, but kept them smooth as well. My mom has swore by this product for years and I’m so happy I finally gave it a try.

It also helped me achieve the “wet look” on my hair that you can read all about here. I always love a product that’s able to define my curls without weighing it down to the depths of the Mariana. And this is one of the lightest products you’ll find out there that actually have any effect on natural hair.

  • Can be used for wash and wear styles, defining curls, and taming frizz
  • Made from coconut and shea oils for deep hydration

5.) Carols Daughter Sacred Tiare 4-In-1 Combing Creme

I won’t lie. This product is by no stretch cheap….but it works so well that I’ve been forced to look past the price. And your girl’s a penny pincher–so this is big. I am never able to achieve a twist-out, braid-out, wash-n-go, whatever as moisturized and gorgeous as I am when I use this product. The consistency is amazing for my type 4 curls, making it the perfect post-wash hair care regimen.

The product is even marketed for for Damaged, Fragile, Frizzy & Unruly Hair. And did I mention the hair care line is Black owned? If there’s one thing I could’ve used during those years of twisting my hair after a wash to reduce shedding–it would hands down be this product.

  • Natural Fortifier
  • Preps hair for smooth styling

  • Detangles without breakage
  • Deeply moisturizes
  • Enhances natural shine

6.) Cordless Deep Conditioning Heat Cap

If there’s one beauty supply I really wish I had micro-invested in a long time ago, It would be a cordless heat cap. My traditional hair dryer is loud, big, and inconvenient to take out– so this was a saving grace when it came to making sure my hair still got the deep condition it needed. The bag heats up and you place it directly over your hair, allowing any oils and conditioners to penetrate deep into your scalp. You won’t have to worry about your family getting annoyed by the noise, and you’ll still be able to both listen to and do other things while your curls get a ‘spa-like’ deep condition.

  • Fully adjustable for differing head sizes
  • Easy to use– Simply microwave and you’re ready
  • Designed for heat retention
  • Velcro band for secure wear

  • Locks in styling
  • Works with all hair types
  • Quiet
  • Gradually and evenly disperses heat throughout your hair
  • Perfect for deep conditions, hot oil treatments, and thermal head spas

7.) A (Curly)Hair Diffuser

Long or thick hair can benefit from this large hair diffuser — as it’s actually meant for natural textures. The 3-D prongs disperse air evenly, keeping curls defined while adding volume, which thicker hair can sometimes lack when curls weigh it down. It fits perfectly on a blow-dryer with a 6-inch circumference, and the silicone base helps secure the diffuser to the nozzle. At least in my own experience, this is the one tool I needed to finally solidify a wash-n-go and combat shrinkage. I got to say buh-bye to my t.w.a and hello to bouncy curls (not that there’s anything wrong with a twa of course.) My coils are massively prone to shrinking up post-wash so I finally hopped on this bandwagon after tons of natural hair youtubers swore by its magic. No regrets hun.

  • Designed to enhance your natural curl and texture
  • 360 degree airflow diffuses hair evenly and gently to maximize volume while banishing frizz
  • The fingers feature drying vents, so you get simultaneous air flow at both the root and tips
  • An inner banded seal to ensure that the blow dryer diffuser stays in place on your hair dryer while styling

  • Gets your curls poppin’
  • Gets rid of frizz
  • Saves time with quick drying
  • Maximizes your hair’s volume

8.) Spray Bottle

A simple, yet crucial addition to any hair care regimen. Type 4 curls need constant moisture and hydration to stay healthy, so if you don’t have a way to transport water from the faucet to your hair, other than your hand, you’re seriously playing yourself. I tell you this with love curlfriend. Your hair is thirsty and it needs water basically every time you style it. If not, you’ll end up with dry, brittle ends and dull roots. The elasticity of my hair saw an immediate improvement as soon as I started using a spray bottle and i bet you yours will too. SKsksk.

  • Lightweight
  • Portable
  • Ergonomically correct comfort grip trigger head that fits the hand to make lifting and using easier

  • Convenient for quick hair care
  • Versatility in liquids that can be stored
  • Necessary hydration for manageable hair

9.) Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Treatment Masque

Would this even be a natural hair products post if I didn’t list Shea Moisture? Not only is the consistency of this masque perfect for damaged (or just desperate) locks, but one of the main ingredients is Jamaican Black Castor Oil! Basically the best essential oil for natural hair; don’t @ me. Your hair will literally feel so healthy after you use this masque like I’m not kidding. It penetrates your hair and genuinely strengthens and restores your curls. It’ll be your saving grace–especially during the Winter months.

10.) Mielle’s Curling Custard

So how did I finally achieve a solid twist out with a product that didn’t flake up? My wonderful auntie bought me a container of Mielle Organics Pomegranate & Honey Curling Custard.

The product is quite lightweight, and honestly doesn’t hold like gel at all. But that’s why it’s like magic on my curls. They’re not weighed down. They’re bouncy. They’re shiny. They’re easy. Breezy. Beautiful. Cover girl.

Just playing around with those last 2 but my point is clear. My aunt has 3c curls so generally a product that works for her, does not work for me. But this custard was a rare exception.

Your girl is all about her all natural products. If I can actually read and understand most of the ingredients…..then I’m already 75% sold. Some of the main ingredients include babassu oil, fruit oil, , Astrocaryum Murumuru seed butter, Coconut Oil, Pomegranate extract, Sweet almond oil, Honey, and Avocado Oil. So yes–this product is extremely hydrating. Of course I can’t completely overlook the other ingredients that I’ve never heard of but I’m pretty sure the pros outweigh the cons. The custard is even marketed as containing no “harsh chemicals.” The twist out I got from this product lasted me five days so I was incredibly impressed.

  • Natural Ingredients
  • Designed for thirsty hair
  • Lasts for days

  • Hydrates dry thirsty curls
  • For great curl definition and long-lasting shine
  • Pomegranate soothes frizzy hair
  • Helps detangle and moisture hair

So there they all are. From one curlfriend to another, simplify your life now and try out at least one of the products. I’d absolutely love to hear about products you can’t live without either.
